Disney Celebrates Muppets Home Video Release With New Web Series

The last time the Muppets made it onto our radar coincided with the release of their most recent movie, Muppets Most Wanted. That film is soon to be available on home video, and Disney has celebrated the occasion with a new web series titled Disney Drive-On.

Disney-Drive On arrived on August 1st, the same day as the Muppets Most Wanted video on-demand (VOD) release. The series is to some degree an advertisement for Disney Movies Anywhere, a VOD service the media corporation launched earlier in 2014. Muppets Most Wanted–which struggled at the box officebecame available on Disney Movies Anywhere 11 days before its DVD and Blu Ray release.

Disney Drive-On takes place at Disney’s studio lot in Burbank, where Walter (the main character from the 2011 Muppet movie) learns about the ins and outs of Hollywood. As with other Muppet productions, there are celebrity cameos, and Disney ties in its other properties as well. The first episode features Martin Landau and includes a Wreck-It Ralph sighting.

Much of the humor in Disney Drive-On is eye-winking parody of the movie business. As a result, this series is not quite as much fun as some of the previous web videos the Muppets have starred in, and it’s probably aimed at parents more than their kids. Still, Disney Drive-On is a reminder that there’s not nearly enough fresh Muppet videos on the Internet. If Disney plans to only use Muppet web series to provide their films, then I hope we get a lot more Muppet movies in the future.
