Twitter Wants More Creators To Use Spaces—So It’s Offering Them $2,500 A Month

Twitter really, really wants more people to use its Clubhouse copycat Spaces (especially now that monetization is a thing). And to help make that happen, it’s launching Spark, a three-month accelerator that’ll pay participating creators $2,500 per month.

For those unfamiliar with Spaces, it’s Twitter’s burgeoning live audio component, aka the thing that’ll soon take up the empty spot at the top of your timeline where poor, ill-fated Fleets used to reside. Creators with access to Spaces can host sessions where they present solo or have discussions with other creators, and their followers can listen in.

Folks who are accepted to Spark (more on that process below) will be expected to host Spaces at least twice per week for the entire three months. Twitter wants those Spaces sessions to be sequential–meaning creators aren’t supposed to just go live and talk about whatever comes to mind.

“We’re looking for emerging Creators who are passionate about the live social audio format and interested in creating recurring programming on Spaces,” Twitter said in its Spark announcement. “Whether you have an existing show you’ve been hosting for weeks, or a brand new conversation you want to try, we want to support you.”

Support for participants will include the aforementioned $2,500/month, plus monthly ad credits, “custom Spaces swag,” early access to new products and features, promotional spotlights in Twitter’s own content series, a virtual kick-off with Twitter product execs, and “opportunities for prioritized in-app discoverability for well-performing Spaces,” Twitter says.

As for who’s eligible for the accelerator, Twitter’s Spark FAQ explains that its overall goal is to “discover social audio talent” and “help the new and next generation of audio Creators build their audience, experiment with content and conversations, and establish a foundation for future success.”

That being said, Twitter is primarily looking for people who are already using Spaces, and will approve or deny entrance based on “both the quantity and quality of your past Spaces, as well as your unique and distinct POV as a Host and a voice on the Twitter platform.”

Creators who haven’t used Spaces must either have an “established show in social audio on other platforms,” have “an established show on radio or podcasts and want to experiment with social audio and Twitter,” or be “an emerging Creator with a knack for great conversations who really wants to rule social audio.”

Applications for Spark open today, and will be accepted through Oct. 22. Accepted creators will hear back sometime in November.

Twitter wasn’t the first to jump on the “live social audio” bandwagon, and it also wasn’t the first to kickstart a creator program geared specifically for audio creators. Clubhouse announced its Creator First program back in March, and unveiled its inaugural class of 25 original shows in May.
