Tubefilter’s Guide To San Diego Comic-Con 2013

From Thursday, July 18th to Sunday, July 21st, the world’s most fervent nerds will descend on the San Diego Convention Center for the 44th annual Comic-Con. Among many other presenters, the online video community will be out in full force over the four days. Here are some events to check out:

Thursday

Cartoon Network: Annoying Orange
12:45-1:45
Room 6DE
The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange has been, without a doubt, the most successful TV program based on a web series, and its creator and stars are ready to do a happy dance. Literally. At this panel, there will be a musical number and a ‘Toby Turner dance’, along with many other fruit-related tidbits from Dane Boedingheimer, iJustine, and others.

Ghost Ghirls: A Behind-the-Scenes Paranormal Experience with Jack Black
1-2
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Jack Black‘s Yahoo web series, Ghost Ghirls, has been in production for seven months, and the comedy actor is ready to finally debut his web original for the Comic-Con audience. Will he also drop hints about the rumored Tenacious D web series? We can only hope.

Digital Development and Marketing Your Comic, Web Series, App or Game: Kickstarter
1:30-2:30
Room 8
Remember when, earlier this year, multiple online video projects broke Kickstarter and Indiegogo records? I thought that was pretty cool. Here, those online fundraisers will share their success stories. Panelists include Bernie Su of Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Matt Enlow of Squaresville, Sarah Penna of Big Frame, and Megan Westerby of Collective Digital Studio.

Webseries Creators Assemble!
7:30 pm-8:30
Room 24ABC
Since you’re currently reading this website, you probably enjoy web series, and may even have one of your own (and if you don’t enjoy them, uh, hi.) This panel will bring together the creators behind several successful web series, such as Husbands, The Legend of Neil, Shelf Life, and Super Knocked-Up.

Break Invaders
11 am-5 pm, 7 pm-2 am, and 11 am – 5 pm on Friday
Dick’s Last Resort
Break‘s Comic-Con event will feature plenty of arcade games, a giant-sized version of Space Invaders, and an appearance from Man At Arms‘ Tony Swatton. I think the cosplayers will find his real-life versions of famous fictional weapons to be right up their alley.

Friday

Stan Lee’s World of Heroes
10:15 am-11:15
Room 6BCF
Stan Lee will discuss his YouTube channel, and Cosplay Piano wunderkind Sonya Belousova will perform. 5SecondFilmsBen Gigli will moderate; I hope he’s not too grumpy.

Husbands: The Next Marriage
8 pm-9
Room 7AB
Jane Espenson and Brad Bell will soon release new episodes of critically-acclaimed web series Husbands, and they will discuss both new and old material on this panel, which will also include Bell’s two co-stars, Alessandra Torresani and Sean Hemeon. Go cheeks go!

Saturday

Machinima: Redefining the ‘Fan Film’
10 am-11
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
The YouTube network centered around the coveted young male demographic will take the stage for a discussion of the network’s creators and its ‘core fan‘. Sam and Niko of Corridor Digital will be present, as will Mortal Kombat: Legacy creator Kevin Tancharoen, so be sure to get over there.

Geek and Sundry: Leveling Up
11-12
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Felicia Day‘s YouTube channel is naturally very invested in Comic-Con, and it will provide plenty of coverage from the convention alongside this panel, where Day will discuss upcoming programs. There will be plenty of guest stars, including some of the vloggers featured on the new Geek and Sundry Vlogs channel.

The Awesomes: A Hulu Original Series
2-3
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Like Ghost Ghirls, The Awesomes has been in production for a long time (over one year). Seth Meyers will finally debut his animated Hulu series at Comic-Con, with an assist from his cast, which includes SNL players Taran Killam, Kenan Thompson, and Bobby Moynihan. Chris Hardwick will moderate, because that dude can’t get enough Comic-Con.

Nerdist Industries
3-4
Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Did I mention Chris Hardwick loves Comic-Con? After completing the second annual Course of the Force, the Nerdist will discuss the upcoming happenings on his channel, which hopefully includes a lot more bowling.

No Laughs Allowed: Internet Comedy is Serious Sh*t
7-9
Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15 Theater
Wrap up a full day at Comic-Con with laugh-filled event hosted by Fullscreen. 5secondfilms, Cyanide and Happiness, and SMBC Theater will be among the attendees. There will be lots of funny.

Sunday

There aren’t really any exciting events on Sunday. Maybe catch an early flight home? After three full days of geekdom, many attendees will find themselves all nerded out.
