Amazon Hikes Price Of Monthly Prime Subscriptions By $2.00

Amazon is hiking up the price of monthly Prime memberships from $10.99 to $12.99. The increase will only apply to consumers who prefer to subscribe to Prime — which includes access to Amazon’s formidable video library, as well as free two-day shipping — on a monthly basis, Recode reports, with an annual subscription remaining at $99.

Amazon also offers an $8.99 monthly subscription option for Prime Video, which provides access to its original and licensed programming. This price will remain unchanged.

The increased monthly fee, arriving less than two years after Amazon first enabled users to pay for the service on a monthly basis, represents an 18% hike. Amazon is also increasing its just-announced monthly Prime subscription for students by 18% — from $5.49 to $6.49. Recode reports that Amazon made the changes because the former prices were not sustainable.
