Colleen Ballinger said that she was “absolutely devastated” last month when Netflix opted not to renew Haters Back Off after two seasons. But now, Ballinger has taken to her YouTube channel to tearfully share her experiences working with the streaming giant — which were immensely positive, she says, despite a brief Twitter skirmish in the wake of the show’s cancellation.
Ballinger, 31, says that she was grateful to Netflix for giving her wide-ranging creative control as an executive producer, writer, and editor on the project — something of a rarity in the TV world. She then erupts into tears recounting how her agent broke the news — describing the lovably delusional Miranda Sings character as “my other half,” and noting that many of the storylines were loosely based on her real life.
Ballinger says that, due to legal reasons, she won’t be bringing Haters Back Off to another outlet like Hulu or YouTube Red — although she says she would’ve loved to continue telling the story. Nevertheless, she did provide a glimpse into what season three would’ve focused on: a feud between Miranda and Ballinger herself (who portrayed a Miranda impersonator in season two).

Looking back, Ballinger’s only gripe is with the Netflix customer support team on Twitter, who misled fans after the show’s cancellation by telling them that it was coming back for a third season, and alternately claiming that it was Ballinger’s choice to depart the series. However, Ballinger notes that the issue was ultimately resolved when Netflix’s official customer service account offered an apology. “Everyone I worked with at Netflix was incredible, and I would love to work with again,” she concludes.
