Two Of YouTube’s Biggest Male Beauty Vloggers Hit With Trademark Suit

Two of YouTube’s most popular male beauty vloggers, Jeffree Star and Manny ‘MUA’ Gutierrez, have been sued for trademark and copyright infringement by indie makeup brand Black Moon Cosmetics.

Star and Gutierrez, who count a combined 6.7 million YouTube subscribers, collaborated on a product set through Star’s popular Jeffree Star Cosmetics makeup range comprising a highlighter and two lipsticks slated to launch this weekend. However, in a new federal suit, Black Moon alleges that the product set (above) pilfered its logo, Allure reports. Both logos feature a crescent moon and a black-and-holographic color scheme.

In the suit, Black Moon also claims that Gutierrez expressed his “fondness” for its logo before going on to utilize a copycat design for future projects, according to Allure. Lawyers are also utilizing comments on the two creators’ respective Instagram pages as evidence that many consumers seemed to have noticed striking similarities between the two designs.

Black Moon is attempting to prevent Star and Gutierrez from releasing the products on Saturday, and the company is also seeking damages and lawyers’ fees.

Star responded to news of the suit to Cosmpolitan earlier this week. “[Manny’s] logo has been a moon for years and my logo’s a star,” he said. “We combined them. It was easy — the stars and the moon align.” Star insinuated that Black Moon was using the suit as a press ploy, adding: “Everything is being handled legally. The collaboration’s good. Everything’s happening, and there’s no more drama.”

UPDATE 3/20 @ 9:20 AM ET: Star and Gutierrez told Tubefilter in a statement: “The issue has been resolved. The Jeffree Star Cosmetics x Manny MUA collaboration will launch as planned on April 8. We are so grateful for the continued support of our fans and are excited to share this moment with them.”
