Description: In the web series world, time travel has been used to drive everything from moody sci-fi to silly comedy. That said, there are still creators who are looking to apply time travel in fresh and innovative ways, and one of those creators is Ryan Blackwell. Blackwell is the man behind Futureboy, a layered, time-bending project that is hoping to raise funds on Seed & Spark.

Futureboy starts with a premise that will be familiar to sci-fi buffs: Its protagonist, Billy, has discovered how to travel through time, but when bad people start using his technology to do bad things, he decides to go back in time to see if he can stop himself from ever coming up with his invention in the first place. That concept alone is something we’ve seen expressed before (in as few as five seconds), but Futureboy ups the ante by trapping Billy in the past and forcing him to interact with “a judge, a shrink, his wife…and himself.”

In terms of style, Futureboy seems like it will blend a witty script with some fresh visuals and a generally upbeat attitude. There are no clips I can use to back up that assertion, but I can point to the project’s pitch video, which Blackwell presents in fun, atypical fashion.

Creator Bio: Blackwell comes into Futureboy with plenty of experience in the web series world. His best-known project, 47 Secrets To A Younger You, is a comedy about the lives of working moms.

Best Perk: At the $25 level, contributors receive a personalized animated video. It is reportedly ideal for sharing on the Internet, which can give you major social media points while also giving Futureboy some additional press.

Why You Should Fund It: Blackwell has shown himself to be a web series creator with a sharp and snappy style. 47 Secrets To A Younger You, led by his direction, was an official selection at the most recent Brooklyn Web Fest. Here, he has assembled a talented team to help him realize his time travel story. One of the most intriguing names in the cast is Christine Nyland, who we recently saw in the lead role of the web series Graves.

When you combine its creator’s vision, its cast’s strong appeal, and its curious plot, Futureboy establishes itself as a project worth checking out. And if doesn’t end up meeting expectations, no worries; we can always go back in time and fix it.
