YouTube Millionaires: Babyteeth4 Talks “Fun, Creativity, And Originality” In Family Content

Welcome to YouTube Millionaires, where we profile channels that have recently crossed the one million subscriber mark. There are channels crossing this threshold every week, and each has a story to tell about YouTube success. Read previous installments of YouTube Millionaires here.

Kid channels come in all shapes and sizes on YouTube, but Babyteeth4‘s setup is as wholesome as they come. Babyteeth is a family operation. Two adorable girls — ten-year-old Jillian and her eight-year-old sister Addie — are the stars, and father Bob and mother Tommie serve as the managers, producers, and other behind-the-scenes roles. With that setup, Babyteeth has gained popularity on YouTube, mainly for candy and toy reviews. To talk about the family’s digital work, we chatted with Bob and his daughters.

TF: How does it feel for Babyteeth to have one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Bob Babyteeth: It’s just an unbelievable feeling that so many people care about our videos and want to keep seeing more, and it’s great to be able to say we’ve hit that million sub mark.  We are very fortunate and so grateful to our viewers, we’d love to be able to thank everyone individually for supporting us over the years!

TF: What do you think separates good family content on YouTube from less distinguished stuff?

BB: I think the best family content comes from a place of fun, creativity, and originality.  You can tell the channels that really enjoy what they are doing and put a little bit of themselves into what they’re doing, and I think the viewers respond strongly to that.

TF: What does the creative process for your channel look like? How long does it take to plan, shoot, and edit your videos?

BB: We make at least five new videos each week (and every day in December) so we are constantly looking ahead and moving forward.  My wife Tommie and I are always bouncing new ideas off each other and looking for new and fun ways to incorporate toys and candy into the videos.  Each video shoot is usually less than an hour, and the editing, thumbnail and upload process usually takes 2-3 hours per video.

TF: What steps do you take to ensure Jillian and Addie are eager and excited about the videos they star in?

BB: The girls are very involved in coming up with new ideas and are becoming quite savvy about the inner workings of the toy industry, YouTube, and audience discovery.  It’s seldom difficult to get them interested in opening up new toys and candy, and they always enjoy the time we spend together as a family.

TF: What’s the oddest piece of mail you’ve received from fans?

BB: Jillian seems to be popular with young school boys in the U.K. and has received at least one marriage proposal!

TF: There has been controversy surrounding the presence of sponsored content on the YouTube Kids app; some watchdog groups believe children are being exposed to too much branding at young ages. As someone whose videos often refer to specific brands or products, how do you respond to that?

BB: Watchdog groups are pushing their own agendas and trying to stay in the news more than anything else.  We don’t need watchdog groups, we need involved parents who know how to talk to their kids about economic realities and can prepare their children for the real world they will live in when they grow up.  Being an informed consumer is part of growing up, and our videos provide a real world experience with a product and information that kids can’t get otherwise.

TF: To the kids: How do you feel about how much people seem to like your videos?

Jillian: It makes me feel really happy to know so many people are watching our videos, and I hope our videos are making them smile too!

Addie: It’s great, and I like it when fans recognize me!

TF: Do you have a favorite type of candy you’ve reviewed?

Jillian: Junior Mints and Japanese candy are my favorites.

Addie: I like Swedish fish the best!

TF: What’s next for your channel? Any fun plans?

BB: We’re exploring having Jillian & Addie take the reins on vlogs and other types of videos of their own initiative.  Also, we have been planning to get back to our roots and bring back the short fictional comedy videos (we call them mini-movies) that got us started.  I can’t reveal too much here, but we think our viewers are going to be really excited.  We know we are!
