YouTube prides itself on its tolerance of and support for the LGBT community, and one of the most prominent creators working within that space is Davey Wavey. Wavey, who is partnered with BroadbandTV, has made a name for himself by educating his viewers about LGBT issues. In his videos (where he often appears shirtless and shows off his well-toned body), Wavey talks about love and sex with his million-plus subscribers. To celebrate his achievement of YouTube’s seven-digit milestone, we asked him a few questions:

Tubefilter:How does it feel to have one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Davey Wavey: Usually, I try not to get caught up in the numbers. For me, the real measure of success is creating content I’m proud of that impacts other people. Having said that, I couldn’t do this as my job if people didn’t tune in and hitting a million subscribers is pretty fucking cool.

TF: What does your creative process look like? How much time do you spend planning videos before you film them?

DW: It really depends. Some videos, I film in an hour or two. Other videos can take a few months. We recently posted a video of people’s faces during the moment of orgasm…in slow motion. From start to finish, it took about six months. Regardless of how long it takes, the process almost always starts the same way. And that’s with me having a video idea while on the treadmill, in the shower, or while taking a shit.

TF: What would you say is the central message of your channel?

DW: My channel is about self-celebration. More than accepting who you are, it’s about owning it and honoring it – especially certain aspects of ourselves, whether it be our body types, gender identity, sexual orientation, or otherwise, which may seem especially tough to celebrate.

TF: What are some common misconceptions about being gay that you hope you can clear up through your videos?

DW: I’ve been making videos for nine years. And during those nine years, a lot has changed. When I first started, I addressed misconceptions that straight people had. Like that all gay men are hairdressers or sexually promiscuous or that we’re weak. But it’s 2016. Most people recognize those misconceptions for what they are. Now, I’m much more focused on the misconceptions, stigmas, and issues within our LGBT community. Those include slut-shaming, a lack of respect for elder-gays, fem-shaming, HIV, and body issues, to name a few.

TF: Now that gay marriage is legal in America, what is the next stepping stone for the LGBT community?

DW: Marriage equality is a huge milestone. But it doesn’t mean that all of our problems magically went away. There is so, so much work to be done, especially for our transgender siblings. Just look at the comments in YouTube’s recent pride video which celebrated gender identity. It’s a reality check for the rest of us.

TF: What do you think straight people can take away from your channel?

DW: Straight people can learn the importance of anal douching. This is the most important gift that I have for the straight world.

TF: What is your primary goal for Rising Rainbows?

DW: Rising Rainbows is a scholarship fund that I created for LGBT YouTubers from underrepresented communities with fewer than 10,000 subscribers. The goal is really to get more voices heard, and to lift up talented content creators who have something to say. Over time, I think that goal will widen and expand in some exciting directions.

TF: What tips would you give someone who is looking to get in better shape?

DW: Don’t exercise because you hate your body. Do it because you love your body and you want to nourish it with the gift of movement that it so desperately craves. Come from a position of strength, so that you’;re getting in shape to honor your body – rather than fighting a war against it.

TF: What’s next for your channel? Any fun plans?

DW: Lots of exciting plans! I’m on a really exciting journey of sexual exploration and discovery, and will be hitting on themes like shame, nudity, the power of our erotic bodies and much more. It’s going to get wild!
