Lilly Singh, The Dolan Twins, And Cameron Dallas Win Big At 2016 Teen Choice Awards

Lilly ‘Superwoman’ Singh cleaned up at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards yesterday evening, taking home two of the night’s biggest prizes within the web/digital category, including Choice Web Star: Female and Choice Web Star: Comedy. Singh, who was out of the country and did not attend the awards ceremony, Instagrammed the speech she says she would have given: “We are not just numbers and views,” she wrote. “We are creators who own businesses and are here to stay.”

Not to be outdone, The Dolan Twins also took home two prizes last night, including Choice Web Star: Male and Choice YouTuber — honors that the brothers claim reduced them to tears. Of the 14 total web/digital awards, Bethany Mota also won Choice Web Star: Fashion/Beauty, Cameron Dallas won Social Media King, Lele Pons won Choice Viner, and Baby Ariel, musical.ly’s most popular creator, won Choice Muser.

While Dallas and other social stars have complained in the past that the Teen Choice Awards are rigged by producers, the awards show claims winners are determined by fan voting. This year, producers say, 37 million fans voted on Twitter, Fox.com and the Fox Now App.

Another controversy to beset this year’s awards was the fact that Christina Grimmie, who was fatally shot at a meet-and-greet in June, won the award for Choice Web Star: Music but wasn’t recognized on air. Many fans were incensed after the show, and one even started a Change.org petition demanding that the Teen Choice Awards offer a formal apology. The YouTuber Shane Dawson, who has also complained that the Teen Choice Awards are rigged, tweeted, “I’m glad the TCAs didn’t do a memorial for Christina Grimmie. I don’t want her beautiful face anywhere near that trash show.”

While #TeamInternet was out in full force yesterday, several traditional celebrities ended up taking home awards within the web/digital space. For instance, pop group Fifth Harmony won the Social Media Queen trophy, Selena Gomez — Instagram’s most-followed account — won Choice Instagrammer, and Kylie Jenner won Choice Snapchatter.

However, digital stars dominated the conversation on social media. According to Twitter, the most Tweeted-about celebrity of all last night was Grayson Dolan, followed by his brother, Ethan, with Fifth Harmony coming in third. Australian pop band Five Seconds Of Summer and Dallas rounded out the top five. A full list of the Teen Choice Awards winners is available right here.
