Gunpowder & Sky Announces Film Adaptation Of Zombie Road Trip Novel ‘Eat, Brains, Love’

Gunpowder & Sky (G&S), the digital-first studio founded by former MTV and Endemol executives Van Toffler and Floris Bauer, has announced its first project since launching last January: a film adaptation of Eat, Brains, Love — the zombie road trip novel by Jeff Hart.

G&S will team with independent production studio DIGA and digital book publisher Full Fathom Five — which also creates television shows, films, and video games — on the project. DIGA was founded by Tony DiSanto, whom Toffler calls his “former work wife and Jersey Shore co-production partner,” while Full Fathom Five is the brainchild of novelist James Frey.

“It’s got everything you need from a movie,” said DiSanto in a statement, “high school insanity, zombie sex, action, zombie sex (again) and over the top violence.” DiSanto and Toffler also previously produced several teen-oriented horror projects together at MTV including Teen Wolf, Scream, and My Super Psycho Sweet 16.

Eat, Brains, Love tells the story of two high schoolers who are on the lam after devouring the brains of half their senior class, and a teen psychic sent by the government to track them down. It is the first book in a two-part series whose sequel is titled Undead With Benefits.

The film will have a “low budget,” Toffler told Tubefilter, and is slated to premiere this year or early next year. “In terms of distribution, we always look at story first, and then determine the best platform for the targeted demo of the connected generation.” He added that the film’s cast will hopefully “be filled with future breakout stars in the same way we had cast movies for MTV Films and even MTV.”

In addition to Eat, Brains, Love, G&S previously announced the development of a film called DC Trip with Bona Fide Productions and Adaptive Studios, about a high school trip to the White House gone awry. The studio has also recently invested in and inked partnerships with viral content studios Cut, known for its Baked and 100 Years of Beauty series, and Shareability, which is behind Cristiano Ronaldo In Disguise and Freshpet Holiday Feast.

“We are working on multiple projects that will be announced soon,” Toffler added, noting that the team is currently meeting with potential screenwriters and directors for Eat, Brains, Love this week.
