BuzzFeed Motion Pictures Releases First Video App

BuzzFeed Motion Pictures has launched a new mobile app today aptly entitled BuzzFeed Video, which assembles much of the video content the media giant has created into one foolproof hub.

“Currently, we publish our video content to over 30-plus platforms,” BuzzFeed said in a statement, “and for the first time, we have developed our own proprietary lightweight video player that makes it easy to binge-watch videos with autoplay.”

The app’s interface is simple, with just two sections. One, a seemingly endless vertical stream of ‘Trending’ videos that autoplay as users scroll downward. And two, a list of BuzzFeed’s popular ‘Shows,’ including The Try Guys, Tasty and Whine About It!, which users can also subscribe to in order to be notified when new episodes go live. As BuzzFeed experiments with windowing content, it says, the app could become a destination for new episodes of its shows “before they have been distributed anywhere else.”

And ads are imminent, a BuzzFeed spokesperson told Tubefilter, as the company plans to introduce a native mobile ad product in the “very near future.”

The app represents a bit of a departure for the media giant, which pivoted in 2015 to distribute more content across social platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Snapchat rather than directing users to its own site and apps. Accordingly, viewership has exploded, with BuzzFeed saying that its global reach could ultimately amount to as much as 400 million people. Now the site’s most dedicated fans, or those seeking a BuzzFeed binge, can find all of its videos in one place.

BuzzFeed Video is available now for download on iOS and Android.
