CBS To Debut New ‘Star Trek’ Series On CBS All Access Streaming Service

CBS will soon boldly go where very few broadcast TV networks have gone before. In January 2017, the Eye will launch a new Star Trek series. It will be the first iteration of the 50-year-old franchise since Enterprise went off the air in 2005 and the first original content CBS has created specifically for its $5.99-per-month All Access streaming video service.

Produced by CBS Television Studios, the untitled Star Trek show will introduce viewers to what a release calls “new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations,” all while addressing important social-skewing themes that have become a quintessential part of the franchise. CBS will run a special preview broadcast of the new Star Trek series across its linear network before making the premiere and ensuing first-run episodes available exclusively to U.S. All Access subscribers. Trekkies around the world will be able to catch the series on TV and various platforms thanks to CBS Studios International.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the 2009 Star Trek film and 2013’s Star Trek: Into Darkness, is on board as executive producer under his Secret Hideout banner for the new CBS series (which won’t be related to either of Kurtzman’s films or the upcoming Star Trek Beyond). Heather Kadin will also work alongside Kurtzman as an executive producer. No casting, director, or writer announcements have been made for the new Star Trek series as of yet.

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, EVP and General Manager of CBS Digital Media in a release. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

Originally created by Gene Roddenberry in the mid-1960s, the Star Trek franchise currently includes six different shows spanning the years 1966-2005 and boasting a total of 726 episodes and 30 seasons across all series. The franchise also contains more than 12 feature films, and has inspired several fan-created digital series. Star Trek will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2016, only a year before CBS has chosen to launch the new untitled series.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” explained David Stapf, President of CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
