YouTube’s Tenth Birthday Month Continues With Playlist Of Newsworthy Moments

YouTube has arrived at the letter N as part of its month-long, A-to-Z celebration of its tenth birthday. After spotlight memes like The Harlem Shake and Draw My Life for the letter M, the video site’s Trends Blog has turned to a more serious topic: News. YouTube has created a playlist that shares a selection of its news coverage over the past decade.

The blog post that accompanies the playlist discusses the importance of YouTube’s role as a voice for anonymous filmmakers who need a platform on which to share their videos. In particular, YouTube notes the 2009 shooting of Iranian student Neda Agha-Soltan. Her death was captured by multiple videographers, who uploaded their clips to YouTube, where they were viewed millions of times and ultimately recognized by the George Polk Awards. Warning: The videos shot at that scene are very graphic.
