Description: In April 2014, we used this space to highlight Dragon Ball Z: Light of Hope, a planned fan project based on the titular anime and manga series. After production company Robot Underdog managed to raise over nine thousand dollars on Indiegogo, it put together a Light of Hope pilot, which hit YouTube in February 2015. That pilot received some much-deserved acclaim, and with fan support behind it, Robot Underdog has returned to Indiegogo, where it hopes to raise $50,000 to fund the next two episodes of Light of Hope.

As in the pilot, the next two episodes will return viewers to Dragon Ball Z‘s History of Trunks story, in which one of the series’ Saiyan protagonists must defend his civilization from an invasion of merciless androids. We’re expecting plenty more energy blasts, a loving tribute to the DBZ franchise, and a further reason to forget the terrible live-action DBZ film that hit theaters five years ago.

Creator Bio: Since Robot Underdog began working on Light of Hope, it has focused its efforts on videos related to the project. Here, for example, is the studio’s music video for a heavy metal cover of the Dragon Ball Z theme song.

Best Perk: As they could during the previous Light of Hope Indiegogo campaign, Dragon Ball Z superfans can pick up a copy of Dragon Soul, a book about DBZ fandom. During this campaign, the price of that perk is $35 cheaper than it was last time.

Why You Should Fund It: When he first pitched Light of Hope to potential backers, director Donnie McMillin promised “a quality live action Dragon Ball Z movie.” He and his team delivered on that promise, and then some. The Light of Hope pilot is fun, action-packed, cleanly shot, full of dazzling special effects, and faithful to the existing canon. In other words, it is exactly what a fan film should provide to fans of the source material.

That, according to McMillin, was what Robot Underdog accomplished by producing “the bare minimum of what we’re capable of.” This time, with a per-episode budget more than two-and-a-half times that of the pilot, Robot Underdog can make Light of Hope even more stunning than its already-impressive debut. For fans of Dragon Ball Z who want to see a worthwhile live-action project based on the series, this is the one to fund.
