Description: collective:unconscious is a project through which five budding filmmakers will dig into each other’s heads. I don’t mean that literally, of course; this isn’t Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Movie. Instead, each participating filmmaker will describe one of his or her dreams in as much detail as he or she desires. Once that step is completed, series creator Dan Schoenbrun will assign each dream to one of the other filmmakers, who will then have to adapt that dream however he or she sees fit.
None of the five participating filmmakers are particularly recognizable names, but they all have strong work on their respective resumes. Their names are Josephine Decker, Frances Bodomo, Lauren Wolkstein, Daniel Patrick Carbone, and Lily Baldwin, and they have collectively appeared at big-name film festivals like Tribeca, SXSW, and Sundance.

Creator Bio: Schoenbrun himself has a very relevant job: He works on film partnerships at Kickstarter. As film fans might expect from a project like this one, Schoenbrun is a big David Lynch fan. In an interview with Filmmaker Magazine, the first film he mentions as inspiration for collective:unconscious is Mulholland Drive, which also mashed up dreams with reality.
Best Perk: For $150, one of the five filmmakers involved will analyse one of your dreams in a 15-minute Skype session. That’s only slightly more expensive than a typical psychoanalysis session, and you get to support an independent film project as well.
Why You Should Fund It: The collected plaudits received by the five participating filmmakers offer several enticing reasons to support collective:unconscious, though I’m more predisposed to trust Schoenbrun to be good at his job. If the man who works with aspiring creators on Kickstarter tells me these five are worth checking out, I’m inclined to take him at his word. Plus, I’m also a huge David Lynch fan, so even if these filmmakers had no official selections, I’d be excited about the prospect of dreamlike spaghetti vomit nonetheless.
