Disney To Spend $200 Million Filming Marvel Series In NYC For Netflix

Marvel Universe B-listers Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage are headed to Netflix, but not before coming to New York City on a $200 million ticket paid for by Disney. The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger today announced at a joint press conference with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo that the Mouse House will film its Netflix-exclusive Marvel Defenders project primarily on the streets and soundstages of Hell’s Kitchen and NYC at large.

Over the next three years, Variety reports Disney is expected to spend nearly a quarter billion dollars filming four series – one for each of the aforementioned superheroes – containing 13 episodes a piece. Disney will also cap off the quartet with a kind of Junior Varsity version of The Avengers dubbed The Defenders, a four to eight episode mini-series with an ensemble cast comprised of all four fighters of crime.

“The Defenders are classic New York characters; smart, resourceful and tough enough to always stand up for what’s right,” said Netflix’s Cheif Content Officer, Ted Sarandos in a statement. “We’re delighted they’re coming to life on their home turf thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team.”
