Tribeca Film Searching For More Vine Stars With #6SecFilms Competition

Last year, when Vine was still in its infancy, Tribeca Film played host to the #6SecFilms competition, which shined a spotlight the new class of six-second filmmakers who are using Twitter’s short-form video capture app as an artistic platform. This year, Tribeca Film is once again teaming up with Vine to bring #6SecFilms back for a second round.

As with last year’s contest, this year’s entries will be spread across four categories: Genre, Comedy, Drama, and Animate. Viners wishing to enter simply need to upload their six-second masterpieces to Twitter and hashtag it with both #6SecFilms and the submission’s category. The best entries will be shortlisted by Tribeca Film’s panel (which last year included director Penny Marshall and the short-form gurus at 5SecondFilms), and a new wrinkle will allow fan votes to decide which Vine takes home the Audience Choice Award.

Some of last year’s finalists are now full-time Viners. Stop-motion animator Jethro Ames took home one of the top prizes, and Meagan Cignoli made the competition’s short-list. All in all, the first #6SecFilms contest attracted more than 400 submissions, and given Vine’s growing popularity, that number is likely to increase this year.

“Making a successful 6-second film is really a true test of creativity and skill. The tools may be simple, but the time is short and the task to do it well is large,” said Genna Terranova, Tribeca Film’s Director of Programming. “Encouraging innovation in storytelling is a cornerstone of Tribeca. Last year was proof that new talent is as evident in six seconds as it is in 6,000. We look forward to seeing what this year will bring as we open it up to international submissions for the first time.”

Among other prizes, winners will receive a meeting with GrapeStory, the marketing agency founded by Gary Vaynerchuk, AJ Veynerchuk, and Jerome Jarre. If you think you’re a six-second all-star, there’s plenty of time to submit. Submissions will be accepted until March 27th, 2014.
