Must-Watch Music Videos: Listen To Radkey, Freak Out

[Editor’s Note: Two major trends have emerged in the recent history of new media: 1) Music videos are the new music and 2) YouTube is the new MTV. With that in mind and to keep you up to speed with the greatest and latest in this online video category, Tubefilter has partnered with INDMUSIC, YouTube’s largest independent music network, to bring you at least one must-watch music video every week. Radkey is a band from a place far off in the mid-west and they perform an almost forgotten brand of rock music known as punk. They first stirred up some buzz at SXSW 2013 playing an official showcase. Now they’re set to play the 2014 SXSW festival at the illustrious Spotify House.

Every year a crop of artists/bands is meant to break out at the Austin-based festival in March, but few of them actually do. I’ve got my money on these guys and you should, too. This insanely good live video for their single ‘Start Freaking Out’ should be all the evidence you need.

The group is made up of three teenaged brothers from the maybe not so far off town of St. Joseph, Missouri. They made huge waves the last two years playing the aforementioned SXSW showcase as well as the 2012 Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn, New York. The trio brings a sound to the table that is both new (compared to what’s out in the world now), yet at the same time deeply influenced by the punk rock scenes of Detroit and New York City from some 40 years ago.

Big cities like New York and Los Angeles always get credit for breaking bands like this and shooting them to the next level. But it’s important to note that in the current big city musical climate of keyboards, drum machines, and vocal loops crowding a stage, Radkey is just three dudes from Missouri rocking out. Let’s not forget where these guys started, where they honed their voice, and where they first banged out power chords into Marshall Stacks.

You can purchase ‘Start Freaking Out’ from their Devil Fruit EP, released on Little Man Records here. The band will also be headlining at Death by Audio Wednesday night (2/19) in Brooklyn. So if you find yourself in the area this is a show you absolutely cannot miss. Perennial Brooklyn garage rockers Shark? will also be joined by Eula and Netherlands, a bill that is sure to involve some “freaking out” and some face melting galore.

Arshan Sadri is the Channel Manager at Brooklyn based, INDMUSIC, YouTube’s largest music Network. He got his start booking comedy and music at the University of Maryland. On weekends he refuses to travel above 14th street, likes to run, and plays in two bands that are just ok. INDMUSIC is YouTube’s Largest Music Network, allowing independent music content creators to monetize their YouTube views without sacrificing creative control or rights to their content.
