‘Veronica Mars’ Is Getting A Web Series

Veronica Mars is getting a web series.

The broadcast television show about a high school private eye with an irreverent attitude that lasted three seasons (two on UPN and one on The CW) and 64 episodes before it was cancelled in 2007, only to make an imminent return 7 years later thanks to a $5.7+ million crowdfunding campaign is getting its very own online spinoff. CW’s online video outpost and incubator, CW Seed, will host the companion, which will be helmed by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas. The Hollywood Reporter notes the digital series will most likely consist of six to eight 10-minute installments.

“Rob and I spoke last night,” said CW president Mark Pedowitz at the Television Critics Association press tour. “He’s very excited about doing this for CW Seed. It may not appear before the film comes out.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not the series will feature Kristen Bell and the rest of the original Veronica Mars cast, most of whom are going to be prominently displayed in the upcoming flick. Thomas and his on-screen talent have incredibly busy schedules (Bell, for instance, is keeping herself very busy with Showtime’s House of Lies), so availability will likely dictate who’s in the spinoff, as well as its premise.

And in case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer for the Veronica Mars motion picture, set to drop at SXSW 2014.
