‘Awkward Black Girl’ Wraps Season 2 With Song And Dance (And Destorm)

Issa Rae‘s critically regarded Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl has now completed two seasons. In a two part finale, protagonist J experiences some major life changes and meets YouTube personality Destorm along the way.

When both parts are put together, the Awkward Black Girl finale runs over 20 minutes. As Rae will soon create a series for ABC, season two’s ultimate episode has allowed her to experience the longer format that she must soon become accustomed to. Watch part one (released on Valentine’s Day) right here, and then check below for the second half. DeStorm’s cameo has him playing a buttoned-up HR rep who adds a splash of sexual tension.

After starting on its creator’s channel, where season 1 was viewed more than nine million times, the comedy series made the move to Pharrell Williamsi am OTHER Original Channel, where it has suffered a drop in viewership but not in quality. One of the highlights of the finale is a full-on dance number where J makes up her own lyrics to Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody”, using the elaborate set piece as a platform through which she quits her job. It’s a nice bumpin’ interlude from the quiet workplace comedy that bookends it.

Between executive producing indie series and writing her TV script, Rae has a lot on her plate, but I have no doubts will see Awkward Black Girl return for season three. It’s too clever and too popular. Plus, there are plenty of other Aaliyah songs that are just waiting for an Issa Rae twist.
