LEGO Becomes Fully Animated For Nintendo Game Tie-In

LEGOs have long been the playthings of stop-motion YouTube creators, who have used the colorful plastic bricks to create scenes of mock news coverage or World Cup soccer action. A new six part web series more closely tied to LEGO turns the medium into an animated format, one that hopes to drum up interest for the upcoming LEGO City Undercover Wii U game.

The first webisode, released on the NintendoWiiUUK channel, introduces viewers to the protagonist of the series, the daring Chase McCain, who captures criminals as he swings across ledges and through buildings. The medium is the same graphical style that will be featured within the game (and the ones seen in previous LEGO games); at several points, game footage is cut into the video in a somewhat seamless transition. Thus, LEGO City Undercover‘s web companion feels very little like the type of LEGO video we’re used to and more like a 3D animated show.

With such a breadth of LEGO content on the web, LEGO City Undercover seems like it will be lost in the shuffle. The first episode is little more than a tease, and the folks at Nintendo and LEGO (who have a YouTube channel of their own) will need to bring out some more exciting plotting to draw in fans.
