Vuguru On New ‘Prom Queen’: “We Couldn’t Be Happier That We Waited.”

Prom Queen: Homecoming is sort of like the Duke Nukem: Forever of web series. The third installment in the Prom Queen series seemed like it would never make it to the US after it was debuted on Canada’s Citytv.com back in 2010. Now, after also finding its way to Japan, the high school mystery series has finally made it to American turf, debuting earlier in October on The CW‘s official website.

Prom Queen was sold to The CW by Michael Eisner‘s Vuguru company and produced by Big Fantastic, makers of another early murder mystery series, Sam Has 7 Friends. Vuguru CEO Larry Tanz explained how the series came to the US:

“We always felt like PQ: Homecoming was a perfect fit for The CW audience. The CW has really started to push harder into original digital  programming through CW Digital and that presented an opportunity to license the series to our ideal distribution partner.”

So far, three episodes of Homecoming have been released by CW Digital, with all of Prom Queen, Sam Has 7 Friends, and Big Fantastic’s Prom Queen: Summer Heat spinoff available for viewing as well.

The delay can be explained by Vuguru‘s reluctance to release the series via its original suitor. Though Tanz didn’t name which platform that was, he explained why things didn’t work out.

While our original distributor (the natural home for a new season) underwent numerous changes in structure and strategy, it became apparent that we needed to look elsewhere to launch the show. It was just too good to just “put it out there” and CW Digital saw the new series and loved it — and we couldn’t be happier that we waited for the perfect partner.”

Homecoming is the third Vuguru series to see a release this month, following Nuclear Family on SyFy and Greetings from Home on AOL. Partnering with The CW brings the company another distribution partner and finally, FINALLY brings new episodes of a classic web series to American shores.
