‘Me and My Old Man’: Old School Meets New School

Me and My Old Man - web series

Created by and staring Rhondahl Keith Adams and produced by Crazy Kar Films, Me and My Old Man is a web sitcom that hilariously explores the intricacies of the father/son relationship. Set in modern-day Los Angeles, the show follows big-dreaming Kevin (played by the talented Devon Stewart), who finds himself having to move back in with his father, Smithy (Adams). The situation is less than ideal for everyone involved and trouble (laced with high-doses of hilarity) ensues. The show is supported by a cast of quirky characters including an overbearing landlady (“Yeah, it’s rent controlled…I’m controlling the rent.”) and an “As Seen on TV” salesman who uses Twitter for the majority of his business.

In fact, a running theme of the show is the use of modern technologies as focal points of the comedy in the show. Kevin enjoys listening to his iPod while brushing his teeth on the toilet. Smithy is obsessed with Janet Jackson’s Twitter account (“Janet Jackson just Twittered that she sat on her new couch”). Bits like this give the show appeal to a wide, young, technology savvy audience.

At the other end of the spectrum is the fact that the show definitely has the flavor of a classic TV sitcom, with particular influences of shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Cosby Show, which was very intentional according to Adams in a press release.

“As a young boy in Dallas, Texas, I grew up watching shows like Sanford and Son, Three’s Company, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Diff’rent Strokes, said Adams. “Shows that gave me a reason to want to watch TV every week. Through these timeless shows, I saw rich relationships develop despite generational, social and racial clash. That too is my desire with Me and My Old Man — to have each episode emphasize the humor, struggles and triumphs of a real father and son relationship in a three dimensional way.”

The one drawback to the show is that the episodes are oddly organized on the show’s website . This shouldn’t keep you from checking it out by any means, just be prepared to hunt around a little. [EDIT: Upon reading this article, updates to the site were made and now the videos are organized in an episode order playlist] The site itself is definitely colorful and attention-grabbing, though I would suggest being ready when you hover over the bouncing “Manbuzz” logo in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. Let’s just say, it makes a noise and if you’re not prepared for it, it can be a little jarring.
