The Escapist recently added a new show to its web roster: I Hit it With My Axe, a reality web series that will air once a week for a year and follow a group of D&D players as they work through campaigns.
And oh yeah, most of them are porn stars. Dare I say it’s GOLD meets Blue Movies?
“We aren’t all porn stars though,” assured Satine Phoenix in a recent io9 interview. “We’re a medley of porn stars, strippers, models, a hair dresser and I am an ex-porn star/fetish model and currently an illustrator.”
Now that we’ve got that cleared up, on to discussing the show itself. Because that’s what we all care about here, right? The merits of the plotlines and production values of the show…and not Mandy Morbid assuring us her boobs are real or Sasha Grey wanting to name a character “Moretocum”.
But in all seriousness, the show is not particularly well put-together: the production values aren’t the greatest, the camera work is shaky, and ironically enough, even though one of the first things you hear is the cameraman proclaiming “does everyone have their cellphones off?”, there are more than a few times where the sound is overpowered by cellphone interference. Still, it is refreshing to see members of the adult entertainment industry in a relaxed atmosphere participating in an activity normally relegated to geeks and social outcasts.
And while it isn’t the first time that porn stars have appeared in web serials such as Going Deep with Kassem G, in which Kassem interviews porn stars in a James Lipton-esque (if he was about 1,000 times more awkward) way, it’s the first time they are producing the content themselves in a way that relegates what they do for a living to the background.
The first episode has already drummed up over 400 comments on The Escapist, more that most shows get for their entire run. The reactions are mixed though, with most agreeing they like the novel idea but aren’t fully grabbed by the show just yet.

Don’t forget PG Porn too! They pair female porn stars with male actors like Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk.
Another great example Casey! It still highlights my point though that this show is unique in the fact that show is focusing less on them being porn stars but more on the hobby they love doing together when they’re…”off duty”.
I’ve been reading their blog for some time now. (What? I read a LOT of D&D blogs. The porn angle in no way affected my judgement.) Just goes to show what I’m always saying in my pitch meetings – D&D (and tabletop RPGs in general) are way more popular and attract a far larger audience than most potential sponsors can imagine.
TTRPG webseries are the wave of the future. You heard it here first ;-)

With all the overly-staged reality shows out there that don’t really look like “reality”, I find ‘I Hit It With My Axe’ a bit refreshing. These people are really hanging out and playing D&D. Plus, nobody can claim that a show about porn stars as gamers lacks originality.
I don’t mind the production values being rough around the edges as that contributes to the show’s “real” feel, though getting the shaky camera work under control would help the show in a big way.
We’ve actually featured both Satine Phoenix and Mandy Morbid in episodes of ‘Field Trippin’ (coverage of AdultCon in ’08 and ’09). I can vouch for Mandy. Yes, her boobs are real. And Satine is the coolest… :)
Cheers!
