“But what about the children? Won’t anybody think of the children?” I certainly had not. When was the last time you watched a porno and wondered, “What do you think their kids are up to right now?” Sure, you only watch teen gonzo flicks, so it’s not really a pertinent issue, but now that I’ve brought it up, what about some of the older stars?

“Like the Osbournes but with dildos and lube,” new reality web series Mommy XXX actually explores an interesting topic that regular television stations won’t (or can’t) touch: that porn stars are just like us! Predominantly like regular folk with bills and spouses and, yes, even children to raise. It just so happens that they have sex for a living. And, okay, some of them are kinda “quirky” people.

For some, I’m sure the concept of thinking about porn stars like regular people borders on revolting. They’ll ask things like, “How can you stop objectifying them like that?” Or, “Your humanizing of these starlets is ruining my wonderful pornography?” But that’s just petty whining.

Demi Delia FamilyWhen I’m watching a series of young, attractive American go-getters or beautiful Eastern European entrepreneurs complete amazing feats of strength and endurance, what will follow on the heels of this career choice is often among my thoughts. How long will she be in the business? Will she star in a Sodebergh film? At some point in the distant future, I suppose these girls will be engaging in intercourse with the purpose to actually procreate, but it’s not a connection I generally make. Mommy XXX creators Steve Slome and John Ferrie are better able to see beyond the sheen of the industry’s soft-lighting and realize that pornstars are people, too.

The preview certainly makes the show look entertaining and – gasp! – possibly even interesting for a reality series, and the first episode delivers. The artificially enhanced Demi Delia is the star here, though they might be throwing the term “star” around rather loosely. I think a few better-known performers, like Tory Lane show up, but I’m no connoisseur (honest) so I can’t be entirely sure.

The first episode of thirteen centers on Demi’s decision to have an eleventh round of plastic surgery. Her two teenage children – Chris and Brandi, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, are the most well-adjusted people in the show – find their mother’s latest choice to be in poor taste, but support her anyway. Sweet.

While I’m not ever a fan of reality tv, Mommy XXX has the luxury of being a web series uninhibited by the obscure codes of taste and decency that limit mainstream television to banality. The premise here seems goofy at first, but it’s also a fascinating sociology project and, like good reality-documentary should be, a boundary-testing work of anthropology.
